What is a Modern Award Allowance?
Modern Award Allowances are additional amounts paid to employees for certain work-related purposes under a particular Modern Award. An allowance differs to a reimbursement, in that an allowance is paid regardless of whether the employee incurs an expense. The most common allowances paid to employees are:
- Meal allowances
- Uniform allowance
- Travel allowance
- Vehicle allowance
- First aid allowance
- Tool allowance
Whether an allowance is payable to an employee, and the amount of the allowance, depends on the Modern Award that covers a particular employee.
