What is a Casual Employee?

Depending on the definition in the relevant Modern Award that applies, generally a casual employee is an employee that works varying hours each week on an irregular and non-systematic basis.

Generally:

  • a regular casual employee is a casual employee that works regular hours on a systematic basis; and
  • an irregular casual employee is a casual employee that works irregular hours on an occasional and non-systematic basis.

Given that casual employees are generally paid an additional casual loading for each hour worked, they are not entitled to paid annual leave or personal carer's leave.
